About us

Who we are - Hevesy in brief

The Hevesy Laboratory is the radiopharmaceutical unit of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), at the Department of Health Technology, which combines cutting-edge research on radionuclides with the commercial production of radiopharmaceuticals. We are a GMP-compliant organization approved to work with both open and closed radioactive sources, including several unconventional radionuclides and high-activity radionuclides that are not typically used in medical departments.

Our lab is located at the Risø campus in Roskilde, Denmark. We have four cyclotrons for radionuclide production and provide products and expertise to hospitals, research laboratories, schools, and private companies throughout Europe and beyond.

What we do - dedicated to radionuclides for society

We apply the use of radionuclides in a wide range of fields, from industrial applications to medicine.

Today, their use in cancer diagnosis and therapy is closely linked to the ability to deliver radioactivity with precision and accuracy inside the body. This can be achieved through two methods: local administration and advanced drug-delivery formulations designed to seek out cancerous nodes. At the Hevesy Laboratory, we are at the forefront of developing and testing these methods.

Having convenient and widespread access to the required radionuclides, including those that are not yet commercially available, is extremely advantageous for our research. They can be produced in-house using our four medical cyclotrons or obtained from abroad using research reactors. After a radiation cycle, the target material is returned to our laboratory for processing and subsequent use or distribution to customers.

At Hevesy Laboratory, we produce SPECT, PET and Theranostic Paired Radionuclides, but are particularly interested in Auger emitters, which are radionuclides that emit concentrated radiation capable of killing individual cancer cells. This form of therapy can be highly effective with minimal side effects. Our laboratory is currently leading the development and production of Auger emitters such as Lanthanum-135 and Erbium-165, while conducting research on drug delivery systems that specifically target cancer cells.

In addition to our cutting-edge research on Auger emitters and special radionuclides, the Hevesy Laboratory is also renowned worldwide for the production of high-quality Copper-64.
